The Santa Bárbara Church was erected in 1770, and has been classified as a National Monument since January 1950. The project carried out between 2015 and 2017 restored the Santa Bárbara Church, one of the most visited and well-known building on the island of São Jorge.
The project for the “Structural renovation of the roof, conservation and restoration of the caissons and remaining decorative elements of the ceiling and walls of the Santa Bárbara Church” included:
• The reconstruction of the church roof, which was removed, refitted, structurally reinforced and waterproofed, under the protection of a temporary metal covering;
• The restoration of the decorative elements in the interior of the church, namely the ceilings of the nave and chancel, altar and tabernacle, among others, was performed by Atelier de Conservação e Restauro de Obras de Arte São Jorge, Lda;
• Painting the outside of the church.
