Fogo EcoLodge: A Sustainable Landmark in Azores Tourism

Fogo EcoLodge: A Sustainable Landmark in Azores Tourism

Tecnovia Açores, in consortium, is building Fogo EcoLodge, a four-star hotel focused on environmental sustainability, located on the Levadas trail in Água d’Alto, Vila Franca do Campo, on São Miguel Island.

Developed by Fogo EcoLodge, Unipessoal, the project embraces landscape integration, the use of local products, and eco-friendly practices. Construction is expected to take 18 months.

Historic Ruins Reimagined

The hotel is being built on the site of the former Paria flax fibre factory, whose ruins will be restored and integrated into the new complex. The architecture takes advantage of the land’s natural slope to preserve visual harmony with the surrounding landscape.

42 Lodging Units and 86 Beds

With a total construction area of 3,480 m², the development will offer 42 accommodation units across four types: two accessible double rooms within the restored ruins, 20 single lodges, 10 panoramic rooms, and 10 panoramic suites with a lounge.

It will accommodate up to 86 guests and include a restaurant with equal capacity, focusing on organic and locally sourced cuisine.

The EcoLodge will feature an outdoor swimming pool, multipurpose room, massage room, sauna, and workspace, providing guests with a full wellness experience.

Sustainable Water Sources

Its environmental commitment includes sourcing water from nearby springs (Passarinhos and EDA reservoir) and restoring the access road. The reuse of the historic ruins and the sustainable construction approach are key pillars of the project.

Comprehensive Engineering Scope

The work includes foundations and structure, architecture, plumbing systems, HVAC, safety systems, technical networks, landscape architecture, exterior lighting, and access infrastructure.

Through this project, Tecnovia Açores strengthens its role in regional sustainable development, creating a new tourism hub that contributes to local economic growth and reinforces the Azores as a responsible tourism destination.
