Tecnovia positions itself as a leading partner in sustainable infrastructure with environmentally certified products
Certification covers bituminous mixtures and aggregates produced in mainland Portugal and facilitates compliance with environmental requirements in public tenders, green financing, and certifications such as LEED and BREEAM
Tecnovia has completed the issuance of 14 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its main ranges of bituminous mixtures and aggregates produced at its industrial centers in Viseu, Rio Maior, Évora, Ourique, and Albufeira. All declarations have been verified by a third party and published by EPD Hub, an ECO Platform-certified operator, reinforcing the credibility of the environmental data made available to the market.
A benchmark in the production of bituminous mixtures and road paving, Tecnovia is one of the pioneering companies in Portugal in providing EPDs for bituminous mixtures and aggregates, placing sustainability at the heart of its value proposition.
EPD’s as a basis for sustainable decisions
EPDs, prepared in accordance with EN 15804 and based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies, provide quantified information on the environmental impacts of products throughout their life cycle. This information covers, among other things, indicators of emissions, resource and energy consumption, allowing solutions to be compared objectively.
For designers, public decision-makers, and customers, these declarations are a practical tool for comparing alternatives based on transparent sustainability criteria, reducing the risk of greenwashing and increasing confidence in design and procurement decisions. Tecnovia’s EPDs can be incorporated into LCA studies of buildings and infrastructure, in bids for projects with environmental criteria, in determining the environmental footprint of projects, and in sustainability reports.
Early response to the new European regulatory framework
The issuance of EPDs is a strategic step towards aligning Tecnovia’s offering with the requirements of the new Construction Products Regulation (EU 2024/3110), which introduces more stringent transparency and environmental performance requirements for construction products.
By making verified environmental data available now, the company is anticipating the future obligation to declare indicators such as global warming potential (GWP), resource and energy use, and other LCA indicators.
This means that customers who choose Tecnovia products are better prepared to respond to specifications that include environmental criteria, as well as to comply with requirements associated with green financing, European taxonomy, and sustainability certifications such as LEED and BREEAM. The information provided by EPDs is also relevant in licensing processes that require demonstration of the environmental performance of buildings and infrastructure.
Territorial coverage and footprint reduction
Through its permanent industrial centers in Viseu, Rio Maior, Évora, Ferreira do Alentejo, Ourique, and Albufeira, Tecnovia ensures a comprehensive response to market needs across much of mainland Portugal. This geographical dispersion allows production to be brought closer to construction sites, reducing transport distances, associated emissions, and logistics costs, a factor that is increasingly valued in the overall assessment of the impact of construction projects.
Tecnovia also has mobile bituminous mixing plants that can be mobilized for large road and airport projects, offering solutions with a smaller carbon footprint and greater operational efficiency. This flexibility contributes to a more sustainable approach to infrastructure construction and rehabilitation, in line with the sector’s decarbonization goals.
Access to Environmental Product Declarations
The EPDs for Tecnovia’s ranges of bituminous mixtures and aggregates are publicly available on the EPD Hub portal and can be requested through the company’s communication channels, namely at sustentabilidade@tecnovia.pt.
The documentation can be integrated into life cycle studies, applications for works with environmental criteria, and sustainability reports for public and private clients.
Sustainability in business strategy
“Issuing DAPs is not just a response to regulatory requirements; it is a strategic choice that reinforces our leadership and makes it easier for our customers to meet their own sustainability goals,” says Alexandre Pereira, Director of Tecnovia Indústria. “We want to be recognized as partners who offer quality products and, at the same time, the transparent environmental information that the market needs.”
For Pedro Nunes, Director of Bituminous Mixtures and CDW, “by quantifying and verifying the environmental impact of our products, we are transforming sustainability from an abstract concept into concrete data that supports investment decisions. This is how we integrate decarbonization into the core of our business and support our customers in developing infrastructure with a smaller carbon footprint.”
With this certification, Tecnovia reinforces its position as a leading partner in construction materials, distinguishing itself by its ability to supply not only quality products, but also the verified environmental information that the market increasingly demands.
This is a step that transforms sustainability from aspiration into measurable practice, positioning Tecnovia at the forefront of the transition to low-carbon construction.
