Acquired in October 2022 by Tecnovia Açores, a company with over 46 years of experience and a strong presence in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Naval Canal – Estaleiros de Construção e Reparação Naval Lda is the latest investment by the Tecnovia Group in the maritime economy.
Naval Canal specializes in the construction and repair of medium and small-sized vessels, operating at the Madalena do Pico Shipyard, located in the Port of Madalena do Pico, on Pico Island, part of the central group of the Azores Archipelago.
With a total area of 15,500 m², of which 13,200 m² are usable land areas, the Madalena do Pico Shipyard is currently the largest shipyard in operation in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. It plays a crucial role in the maintenance and repair of the various fleets registered in the region’s ports. Additionally, its central geographic location in the North Atlantic provides a strategic advantage for assisting vessels on transatlantic voyages, offering quick and efficient services.
The acquisition and operation of Naval Canal by the Tecnovia Group reinforce the importance of the naval sector for the economy of the Azores, standing out as a vital infrastructure for the sustainability and growth of maritime activities in the region.

DECARBONIZATION PROJECT AT THE MADALENA DO PICO NAVAL SHIPYARD
Naval Canal has been investing in improving the infrastructure of the Madalena do Pico Shipyard to enhance the capacity for haul-outs and launches, as well as the support services for maritime activities and recreational boating in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
The ongoing Decarbonization Project of the Madalena do Pico Shipyard, funded under the PRR, will enable Naval Canal to acquire a ship lift (Travelift) with a lifting capacity of up to 670 tons, powered by an electric traction system. The project also includes the construction of the pit for Travelift operations and the acquisition of an electric forklift, essential for supporting shipyard operations, replacing the current diesel-powered forklift.
This project will allow all vessels operating in the Azores, with a tonnage greater than 230 tons and/or length exceeding 30 meters, to perform maintenance work and mandatory certification inspections locally, instead of traveling to the Madeira Autonomous Region or mainland Portugal.
In addition to this crucial benefit for the Azores, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by avoiding unnecessary travel. It will promote efficiency and competitiveness through decarbonization, contributing to accelerating the transition to a carbon-neutral economy.
