Tecnovia participated in the 11th Portuguese Road and Railway Congress with low environmental impact asphalt mixes

Tecnovia was present at the 11th Portuguese Road and Rail Congress – CRP, with low-impact bituminous mixtures, a commitment to circularity and sustainability in bituminous paving.

The 11th edition of the CRP took place from May 13th to the 15th at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) in Lisbon. With around 500 participants, this event brought together professionals, academics and companies from the sector to debate the challenges and solutions for more sustainable, resilient and efficient infrastructures.

Commitment to innovation and sustainability

In line with the principles of the circular economy and its commitment to sustainability, Tecnovia presented its latest advances in the development of bituminous mixtures with low environmental impact. This path of development is the result of continuous investment and a commitment to partnerships for innovation with universities, reference laboratories, suppliers and customers.

United under the same purpose, we seek road construction solutions with a lower environmental impact, guaranteeing the pavement’s suitability and durability.

WMA – Warm Mix Aspahlt with RAP

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) has been a priority for Tecnovia, as it offers multiple environmental and operational advantages:

  • Significant reduction in carbon footprint;
  • Increased incorporation of recycled material;
  • Less exposure of workers to emissions and odours;
  • Reduced energy consumption;
  • Promotion of the circular economy in construction.

Tecnovia’s Technical Contributions at the Congress

During the event, Tecnovia’s technical team took part in the following presentations:

  • Study and Application of Warm Mix Asphalt with RA (Reclaimed Asphalt) and Factory-Added Bitumen
    Authors: Tiago Ribeiro (Tecnovia), Pedro Nunes (Tecnovia Indústria), Nuno Fernandes (Tecnovia) and Maria Elena Bautista (Repsol);
  • Study of Warm Mix Bituminous with Incorporation of Reclaimed Asphalt for Wearing Courses
    Authors: Fátima Alexandra Batista (LNEC), Ana Cristina Freire (LNEC), Anabela Maia (LNEC), Pedro Nunes (Tecnovia Indústria), Nuno Fernandes (Tecnovia) and Tiago Ribeiro (Tecnovia);
  • Mechanical Behaviour of Warm Mix Asphalt with High Incorporation of Reclaimed Bituminous Mixtures for Wearing Courses on Motorways
    Authors: Eugénia Correia (Brisa), Maria João Rato (Brisa), Daniela Domingues (Brisa), José Neves (IST), Teresa Carvalho (Moeve), Pedro Nunes (Tecnovia Indústria) and Nuno Fernandes (Tecnovia).

WMA RAP30 ITER

One of the new bituminous mixtures developed by Tecnovia, and the focus of this 11th edition of CRP, was the AC 14 WMA RAP30 ITER.

This tempered bituminous mixture, type AC 14 Surf asphalt, incorporates 30 per cent milled reclaimed pavement, bitumen rejuvenator and temperature reducer, both of which are additives from Itherchimica, Tecnovia’s partner in the development of WMA with RAP.

Environmentally and health-wise, it has essential characteristics for sustainable bituminous paving:

  • A reduction of around 20% in energy consumption compared to a conventional mix with 10% milling;
  • Increased circularity by reducing the use of virgin raw materials (aggregates and binder);
  • Reduced exposure of workers to emissions (<78% of respirable PM), fumes and odours;
  • 30% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a conventional mix with 10% RAP.

In addition to the environmental benefits, WMA RAP30 ITER offers greater flexibility in transport and application, good compaction and workability at lower temperatures, and cost savings of around 5% compared to a conventional bituminous mix with 10% RAP.

Developed according to the standard EN 13108-1 and in compliance with the requirements of Infraestruturas de Portugal’s reference specifications, WMA RAP30 ITER has been analysed and studied by the National Civil Engineering Laboratory – LNEC, which will issue an Application Document – DA, with its own independent assessment of the suitability of this new mixture.

Commitment to the future of sustainable construction

Tecnovia’s participation in this important congress reinforces its position as an active agent in transforming the road construction sector in Portugal.

The company continues to invest in developing solutions that combine technical excellence and performance with environmental responsibility, preparing its entire product line for the future opportunities presented by sustainability.
