Tecnovia signs contract for Extension of Breakwater and Maritime Accessibility of the Port of Leixões

On the 15th of December 2020, Tecnovia – Sociedade de Empreitados SA, in Consortium with Teixeira Duarte SA and Dredging International NV, signed with Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL) the contract for the execution of the Contract was signed. the extension of the outer breakwater and the Maritime Accessibility of the Port of Leixões

Awarded for 130.2 M €, with an execution period of 30 months, the contract is essential to guarantee the safety and navigability conditions in the Port of Leixões, in particular large ships.

The contract for the extension of the outer breakwater and the Maritime Accessibility of the Port of Leixões consists of three major interventions:

1) Extension of the External Breakwater, in an extension of 300 m, composed by a conventional structural solution of the slope breakwater, composed by core and rockfill filters and by protective blankets of Antifer concrete blocks;

2) Maritime Accessibility, contemplating the deepening of the access channel and the rotation basin, by dredging incoherent and rocky material, in addition to the partial demolition of the North Jetty, in an extension of 80 m, and the reconditioning of its forehead in a further position ;

3) Repair of the Technical Gutter, between the rooting of the outer breakwater and Posto A, an organ dedicated to the passage of pipelines at the Leixões oil terminal (TPL)

According to APDL, the average size of ships seeking the Port of Leixões grew by 77% between 2006 and 2018, so the interventions foreseen in the scope of this work, will ensure the conditions of entry of these vessels, ensuring the competitiveness of Porto of Leixões.

With this investment, Leixões will be able to receive more than 70% of the world’s fleet of ships and continue to serve the hinterland that covers 14 million inhabitants.
